From the first few moments when the audience is treated to rare footage of Joe Strummer belting out "White Riot" a cappella with chilling intensity, The Future Is Unwritten offers an honest and at times unforgiving portrait of the late musician known best for his role in seminal UK punk act The Clash. The 2007 documentary which premiered at Sundance takes the viewer on an engaging ride through Strummer's life, including his prep-school years and conversion from bohemian to street punk to arrogant recording artist who hits rock bottom then reinvents himself all over again. It's truly a film worth purchasing for your personal DVD collection if only to serve as a reminder that even rock icons are humans and that this fact doesn't make their art any less important. If anything, it lends more meaning to their catalogue.

The Future Is Unwritten screens tonight at Sorenson Unity Center (1383 South 900 West) at 7 p.m.
