Race Out and Rent

Truth be told, there's not anything exactly worth "racing out" and renting today. The grandiose but flawed Australia almost certainly works better on a big screen, and there's plenty of more worthy kid stuff than Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
If anything fits the bill, it's the French drama I've Loved You So Long -- but more for a single performance than for the entirety of the film. Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient) plays Juliette, a woman trying to readjust to society after a long prison stint for a crime that's only gradually revealed. The focus is on her relationship with her sister Lea (Elsa Zylberstein), who takes her in, but the appeal here is the impressive way that Thomas makes Juliette's enigmatic blank face emotionally compelling. The ending gets more than a bit melodramatic, but Thomas provides a wonderful case study in what restrained acting looks like.
