Here's one to make some of us feel really old: This Is Spinal Tap, the legendary "mockumentary" created by Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest, celebrates its 25th anniversary today. Released on March 2, 1984, the story of a fading British heavy-metal band on tour went on to gross less than $4.5 million during its entire initial theatrical run. But thank God for home video, where the film became a cult phenomenon and eventually gave birth to a "reunion" album and tour, and Christopher Guest's entire subsequent filmmaking career (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind). If not for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it might well have become the most quotable film ever amongst a certain sub-stratum of movie nerd.
Rock on, lads.
