Rocky Anderson on Wednesday stuffed the mailbox with hundreds of letters addressed to President Obama and every member of Congress calling for a program to come to grips with the Bush years. In the end, Anderson’s organization High Road for Human Rights gathered about 7,100 signatures for the letter.
The High Road missive asks for a truth-telling commission to investigate alleged misuse of power by the Bush administration as well as several changes in the law to stop future presidents from doing things like torturing prisoners or tapping American pones. The letter can be found here.
In a cover letter sent with the mailing, Anderson writes, “Those in Congress and in the current Administration who do nothing, as well as those who oppose these measures, are complicit in the disregard of our Constitution, in the undermining of our system of checks and balances, and in the evisceration of the rule of law. Please count yourself among those who are committed to what is best about the United States: the principle that every person – rich and poor, powerful and powerless – is equally subject to our laws.”
