This week, you can attend a social-justice writing conference at Salt Lake Community College about democracy and the damage done by divisive media spin. Later on, check out a forum at the University of Utah, where you can hear Gov. Gary Herbert speak on politics and his upcoming election battle. Then, start planning ahead to help do leadership volunteer work for the Utah Pride Center’s 2012 Pride Festival in June.

Doing Democracy: Inclusive Civil Discourse
Monday, April 9

If too much media spin leaves your head spinning, then you might be interested in checking out this student conference on the political discourse in our polarized media world. The conference will include student presentations, as well as a community panel in the evening featuring guests such as Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon. The keynote address will be by acclaimed author and human-rights reporter Eliza Griswold. Salt Lake Community College, 1575 S. State, 801-957-4751, April 9, 2:30-9 p.m., WSJConf.wordpress.com

Conversation With the Governor
Wednesday, April 11

The University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics will be holding a forum billed as a conversation with the governor. If you’ve got a burning question for Gary Herbert—be it on the state’s fight with the feds over public lands in Utah, or the guv’s cojones in vetoing the sex-ed bill (despite his numerous conservative election challengers)—then this is your chance. Hinckley Caucus Room, Orson Spencer Hall, 260 S. Central Campus Drive, University of Utah, 801-581-8501, April 11, 10:45-11:45 a.m., Hinckley.Utah.edu

Pride Festival Volunteers
Ongoing

The Utah Pride Festival may not be until June, but now is the time to get in on volunteering to help set up Utah’s fabulously awesome celebration of everything LGBT in Utah. The Utah Pride Center is currently accepting volunteer applications for leadership positions. Applicants must be 21 years or older and be able to commit to two Wednesday-night meetings a month and full-time volunteering during the festival. Management experience is preferred.
