Let’s make 2010 a year to take action. For women activists, consider kicking off the new year with the Women Protecting Wilderness group. For you would-be watchdogs, sign up to become a courtroom observer and keep Utah’s honorable judges honorable. Finally, check out a Utah Transit Authority environmentalimpact meeting.

Women Protecting Wilderness
Tuesday, Jan. 12
Women Protecting Wilderness is preparing to take eco-activism to the next level. The new year has brought new opportunities and new challenges, and the group is looking for your help in encouraging local government to stand up for the remaining wild places in Utah. Come to the meeting to find out what the ruckus is about and what you can do to help.
Southern Utah Wilderness Association, 425 E. 100 South, Jan. 12, 6-8 p.m., 801-486-3161, contact terri@suwa.org.

Courtroom Observer Volunteer Orientation
Wednesday, Jan. 13
The Utah Judicial Performance Commission needs you! That is, if you are a civic-minded volunteer who would be willing to take part in a critical service to Utah’s legal system. It’s kind of like becoming a government spy: You train for three months, and then are assigned various courtrooms to stake out and ensure that court proceedings are fair to all involved.
Utah State Capitol, 350 N. State, Jan. 13 2:30 p.m., 801-538-1800, contact jmcconkie@utah.gov

Open House for Proposed Draper Transit Corridor Project
Wednesday, Jan. 13
The Draper Transit Corridor will happen, in some form, but the Utah Transit Authority is still taking input about where, exactly, the tracks will run. This is the final chance for anyone concerned about the project, especially the environmental track-print, to voice those opinions. Eventually, the extension of the Sandy line will include eight new stations and culminate at the Draper town center.
Skaggs Catholic Center, 11800 S. 300 East, Draper, Jan. 13, 5 p.m. Contact Jeri Ashurst at 801-237-1943. Project plan can be viewed at RideUTA.com
