Got the need for speed? Ever wanted to get the lead out on a world-class race track? The second Wednesday of each month (through September), Miller Motorsports Park hosts Wide-Open Wednesdays, where civilians get to race their own street rods (or mini-vans or Smart Cars) around the course, just like the big boys (and girls) in NASCAR, Supermoto and Grand-Am.

For a mere $20, you can do all the laps you can manage during a three-hour session. Lay down a fast lap time, then line up and try to beat it. According to MMP spokesman John Gardner, not only is racing at the track just plain fun, but “it’s a good way to get kids off the street and into a safe, supervised environment for racing.”

While you’re at it, cruise the Larry H. Miller Auto Museum, which contains a breathtaking array of the late race enthusiast’s renown collection of automobiles, artwork and memorabilia related to Carroll Shelby, the legendary American racer, manufacturer and team owner, including Shelby Cobras, Shelby Mustangs and Ford GT40s.
