Water, water everywhere and nary a drop with which to water your lawn or infuse your water park, or even to drink. What a terrible dystopian world we might live in if we’re not careful with our beloved H 2 0. While conservation may be the first conversation, there’s a slew of water issues to be explored at the Salt Lake County Watershed Symposium. From public discussions and workshops to a debate between Rep. Mike Noel, R-Kanab, and Friends of Alta board member Pat Shea on land and water use policy, there’s something to wet every activist’s whistle.

Friends of Alta Land and Water Symposium
Tuesday, Aug. 25

The top draw in the water wars is a debate over the complex politics of water and land use policy between Shea, a former BLM director and defense attorney for Tim DeChristopher, and Rep. Noel, who continually rails against the feds and environmental “terrorists” like DeChristopher. The two will be matching wits on the subject of water and land development. The debate’s undercard includes panel discussions featuring Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon and Bob Abbey, Obama’s nominee for national director of the Bureau of Land Management, among others. The event costs $35 and an RSVP is required, but it includes a tasty meal to pair with the delicious debates. Alf’s Restaurant, Albion Basin, Alta. Aug. 25, 12:30 p.m.-7 p.m. 801-742- 9719, contact info@friendsofalta.org

Engage, Connect and Protect! Salt Lake Countywide Watershed Symposium

A free version of the Alta event is a West Valley City symposium, which will host two days of events, lectures and panel discussions. Topics include rainwater harvesting, educating the public on water conservation, and finding grant money for water pollution cleanup. There are also field trips, including a jaunt to the Midvale Slag Superfund site, but for those you should RSVP promptly Utah Cultural Celebration Center, 1355 W. 3100 South, West Valley City, contact lbernie@slco.org, 801-468- 2796
