Autumn In New York (MGM, R) A rich playboy (Richard Gere) finally falls in love with a younger woman (Winona Ryder). Fortunately for him she has a bad heart, so Gramps will be free to resume boinking babes 50 years younger than him in no time. Ex-president Bill Clinton’s favorite movie of 2000. (Out Jan. 2)

Hollow Man (Columbia TriStar, R) Paul Verhoeven special-effects splatfest with Kevin Bacon (!), Josh Brolin (!!) and Elisabeth Shue (!!!) as scientists who develop an invisibility serum that tests well on apes and Josh Brolin’s acting career. Soon, Bacon tries the formula on himself to further science—and see girls nekkid! Ex-president Bill Clinton’s second favorite movie of 2000. (Jan. 2)

Under Suspicion (Columbia TriStar, R) Murder mystery starring Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman, based on the French film Les Vieil Hommes Ternes. (Jan. 2)

The Way of the Gun (Artisan, R) Small-time crooks Ryan Phillippe and Benicio Del Toro kidnap Juliette Lewis. Why would anyone pay to get her back? She just happens to be preggers with the offspring of a tycoon goon, who dispatches sub-goons from Tarantinoville in pursuit. Bloody gunfights (cool), bloodier childbirth (ick) and the best Mexican whorehouse finale since Autumn In New York follow. (Jan. 2)

Me, Myself & Irene (Fox, R) A Rhode Island motorcycle cop with split personalities (Jim Carrey) falls in love with a woman who has none (Renee Zellweger). Hilarity ensues when one persona (the mild-mannered Charlie) battles the other (ex-president Bill Clinton) for Irene’s affections. (Jan. 9)

Survivor—Season One: The Greatest and Most Outrageous Moments (Paramount, NR) Now you can own the idiocy on DVD! Episode highlights, profiles, interviews, topography (sorry, big word for Survivor fans) of the island and more useless facts at your digital disposal, plus never-before-seen footage of naked fisherman Richard Hatch spearing the wrong, uh, trout. (Jan. 9)

Wonder Boys (Paramount, R) They’re just going to keep re-releasing it until somebody watches: A hemp-friendly college professor and one-hit author (Michael Douglas) has a lost weekend with his gifted-but-screwy student (Tobey Maguire), his bisexual editor (Robert Downey Jr.), the married chancellor of the school whom he’s impregnated (Frances MacDormand) and his hottie coed boarder (Katie Holmes). You’d think a movie with a story and cast this good would sell more tickets than Autumn In New York, but nooo. (Jan. 9)

Battlefield Earth (Warner Bros., PG-13) Scientologist John Travolta stars in L. Ron Hubbard’s … ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha … oh, my … ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! (Jan. 16)

Coyote Ugly (Buena Vista, PG-13) A sexy young thang moves to the Big City to make it as a songwriter specializing in lame ballads, only to wind up slinging drinks in a leather bra and dirty dancing all wet on top of the bar—ain’t that always the way? Just think, if the movie had actually become a huge hit there would be franchise Coyote Uglies popping up in every strip mall, right next to the T.G.I Fridays, Chilis and Ruby Tuesdays, with leather-clad bimbettes soaking themselves down and gyrating on your table every night (except Sundays). Oh, man … (Jan. 16)

Bait (Warner Bros., R) It’s Jamie Foxx as Chris Tucker as Martin Lawrence as Eddie Murphy in the crime caper that definitely answers the question, “Could one guy really be more annoying than two Wayans brothers?” (Jan. 23)

Cecil B. DeMented (Artisan, R) Crazed indie filmmaker Cecil B. DeMented (Stephen Dorff) and his followers kidnap a successful movie starlet (Melanie Griffith, playing waaay against type) and force her to star in his latest underground flick, making Grand Statements against the Hollywood system along the way. Need it be mentioned that this is a John Waters joint? Didn’t think so. (Jan. 23)

Disney’s The Kid (Buena Vista, PG) Not to imply that Disney actually is the Kid, but that Disney is presenting The Kid to you for your family-fluff enjoyment, OK? Bruce Willis meets up with a kid—The Kid, to be exact—who turns out to be his 8-year-old self sent forward in time to teach his 45-year-old self a few Valuable Life Lessons. During the trip, The Kid should have made a rest stop and told his 36-year-old self to avoid Hudson Hawk at all costs. (Jan. 23)

Steal This Movie! (TriMark, NR) Vincent D’Onfrio and Janeane Garofalo are Abby and Anita Hoffman in this semi-biography of the infamous ’60s Yippie radical who championed free political expression and the right of hipster actors with horrifically matched surnames to star in sanitized history lessons. D’Onfrio and Garofalo—just rolls off the tongue, eh? (Jan. 23)

Dinosaur (Disney, PG) Answering any evolutionary questions left over from the never-ending Land Before Time series, Dinosaur features cute CGI critters getting blown to extinct smithereens by a killer comet, except for the one with ER’s Julianna Margulies’ voice, who survives and becomes the leader of the lemurs. Thank goodness, because the previous leaders of the lemurs were D’Onfrio and Garofalo—say that five times fast. (Jan. 30)

What Lies Beneath (DreamWorks, PG-13) Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer get spooked when they start hearing strange noises and seeing scary wet objects. Fortunately for them, it’s just the Coyote Ugly franchise that opened on the first floor of their condo last week next to the Old Navy. (Jan. 30)

This is a society where, on one side, fad diets and unreasonable surgeries are embraced to control weight loss and, on the other side, we are presented with unrealistic, size-zero beauty. It is refreshing to have a show that presents the undeni- able fact that healthy diet and exercise are the keys.
