Vegan Bloggers
I am, unequivocally, not vegan, but I respect everyone’s culinary choices. There are a couple of good local vegan-food blogs for those of you who, you know, eschew real food (just kidding!). One I especially like is Amanda-Eats-SLC.blogspot.com, by Amanda Rock (I could never figure out if that name is for real or a great stage name). Aside from her ability to track down really interesting and tasty vegan food around town, one of the things I like best about Amanda’s blog is that she has a great sense of humor. She’s not militant about meat and can take a joke as well as dish ’em out. Former City Weekly intern and office mate Joe Bateman (aka Joe Snow) writes The Redundant Vegan blog at RedundantVegan.blogspot.com. A recent post about pizza sounded like something I could get my lips around: cornmeal-crust pizza with crumbled vegan ground sausage, vegan pepperoni, pineapple chunks and mozzarella “teese.” Although he hails from Philly—the land of the cheesesteak—Bateman/Snow just celebrated his 20th year as a vegan. I didn’t even realize the word vegan existed two decades ago!

Madrid Update
As you may have heard, Café Madrid is in the process of relocating to 5244 S. Highland Drive, the site of the former Pancho Villa restaurant. Construction is ongoing and, according to Café Madrid owner Gabrielle McAfee, the restaurant is slated to reopen sometime this spring or early summer. In the interim, dinner service continues at the original Café Madrid location: 2080 E. 3900 South. Phone 801-273-0837 for reservations.

Slice o’ Pie
February is National Pie Month and, with apologies to Marie Callender’s, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more delicious pie than those made by owner/chef Jeff Masten at Left Fork Grill in Murray. His fresh, seasonal pies are made from scratch and taste like Grandma’s. Be forewarned, however: They tend to sell out by midafternoon. You can also order whole pies to go 24 hours in advance by phoning 801-266-4322.
