Practicing piano from a very young age paid off for 23-year-old Yeol Eum Son. Acknowledged in Korea as one of her generation’s most prolific musicians, Son ventured abroad to the highly regarded Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009. She won the silver medal, cash prizes and three years of stateside tours, including an 2010 stop in Salt Lake City. Son is versatile, to say the least, playing more than six different concerti, including solo and orchestral works, in more than 10 performances on this tour.

And, she’s bold and daring in her repertoire.

With the Utah Symphony, she’ll be performing Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, which is known and feared by pianists as a technically demanding, fast and furious piece. Under the baton of former Director Emeritus Keith Lockhart, the symphony will also perform two pieces by Stravinsky, including his satirical Symphony in C.

Van Cliburn Medalist with the Utah Symphony @ Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple, 801-533-5626, Feb. 26 & 27, 8 p.m. UtahSymphony.org
