Logan’s annual Utah Festival Opera (UFO) provides an opportunity for audience members to shed corsets and petticoats, cumberbunds, capes and bow-ties and loosen up a bit.

OK, it’s not like you’ll hear arias sung by divas sporting flip flops and sunglasses, and we’re certainly not talking about performers slackening on professional standards. What we are talking about is a festival environment with soirees, artistic celebrations and theatrical explorations to be had at every turn. For example, this year UFO will stage four full productions (The Barber of Seville, Guys & Dolls, La Traviata and The Sound of Music, pictured) to be performed alongside other events such as The Four Pianists, Musica Magnifica (featuring Marni Nixon, the voice of many early movie starlets from such films as The King and I and West Side Story), Verdi’s Requiem, an international operatic competition and something called the Carnevale Operafiesta that obviously should not be missed.

With more than 130 different events spread out over a five-week span, Utah Festival Opera’s 2010 season has gone bigger and better. The beauty is that the schedule is designed so attendees should be able to capture all the brilliance they can in a mere three- to four-day period. So, take the opportunity to try something unique—and definitely drop the corset or cape if you still have the misplaced gumption to don one—and head to Cache Valley on a mini vacation, where the air is cleaner and there’s “Music in the Mountains” aplenty.
