Trent Alvey’s artwork has always been constructed around a strong conceptual framework, but it has varied according to the occasion, from Buddhist philosophy to scientific inquiry and personal history. In the past, this has included everything from Tibetan prayer flags to jars full of dirt, to metalworks, rope and electric lights. Her new exhibit, Sacred Geometry, creates twodimensional collages and wall assemblages that combine objects and tactile surfaces, built on a complex study of science, philosophy, medicine and faith.
The collage/acrylic works in this instance trace mathematically calculated geometrical objects among a constellation of Buddhist deities and symbols, the swaths of background color ablaze as though with the fire of creation (detail of “Tara(White)” is pictured). She uses objects “that seem to have a dialogue with each other … finding the objects and create harmony or disharmony is my objective.” The result is a totality that describes a truism; as she says, “We have everything we need for a blissful life from the beginning, but it takes a lifetime to discover that truth.” Her body of work can be seen as a journey in search of that realization.
Alvey’s work is complemented by an installation by Corey Bowman composed of cardboard and other “ordinary” materials. Cardboard is unique in that it is flat yet able to be layered and accumulate depth. The University of Utah Architecture student uses the medium to represent layered time and an urban landscape teeming with contextuality.
The show’s run will include both the Jan. 22 and Feb. 19 Gallery Stroll openings.
