Jeff Laver poses a fair, important and timely question of those who may be rethinking their commitment to remain members of the LDS Church [“You Try Being Second Class,” Letters, Jan. 3, City Weekly]. He asks, “But why, in heaven’s name, would any self-respecting adult homosexual want to remain a part of this church where they remain second-class citizens?”
Disagreements with the perceived “second-class citizen” moniker aside, the question has a profoundly simple answer that explains precisely why so many members of the church who belong to the subject demographic have chosen to stay: because they believe the church is true.
