I was buying groceries in Wild Oats the other day and asked the cashier if she was in a union. Her reply: “What is a union?” I said she ought to find out. City Weekly asked Megan Zimmerman who works in freelance film production why unions are important:
Unions protect the rights of workers when no one else will. In Utah, it being a right-to-work State, you can’t enjoy the protections that the union provides. If my industry were unionized, there would be a base pay for a number of hours. If you worked over that time, you would get a guaranteed overtime rate. Instead, how much you get paid and how long you work is up to your boss.
