The SLCPD recently announced a successful sweep for the Pioneer Park area. In total, it netted 257 arrests, over 100 of which were drug-related felony charges (see News). City Weekly asked Diego Castro, owner of the Volk Caffe Bar (336 W. Broadway) adjacent to Pioneer Park, if these sweeps were signs of progress in the area:
I’m seeing a big change. I opened my business last year, during the summer when the construction was going on, and you could see lots of cars going by doing “business.” But, for the last three to six months, I’ve been seeing the police work is really helping the community around here. I see more local people using the park, more dogs and families. The park looks beautiful and is a lot safer.
