West Valley City’s Hale Centre Theatre may be off the beaten track of the downtown Salt Lake City theater venues. But, that doesn’t mean they do things small. Indeed, when they decide to put on a show, the put on a show.
This month, HCT launches its production of the Broadway musical The Scarlet Pimpernel, which the company has previously produced in 2002 and 2004. And, there’s a reason it’s such an audience favorite. Adapting the story by the Baroness Orczy, it tells of a group of late-18th century British aristocrats who set themselves to the task of rescuing their counterparts in France from the anti-aristocracy executions proliferating in the wake of the 1789 revolution. Sir Percy Blakeney adopts the masked identity of The Scarlet Pimpernel—and a heroic paradigm was born that would lead to Zorro, Batman and hundreds more.
And, HCT gives such a seminal tale the grand treatment it warrants, including a working carousel and a guillotine that’ll have you wondering how they did it. Costumes, music and spectacle await you.
