The Rocky Horror Show

The stage version of The Rocky Horror Show predates the film by almost a decade, though both initially flopped when released. The rockin’ freak-fest movie’s midnight showings, including costume malarkey and audience mayhem, helped it become an all-time cult classic.

That said, it’s no easy feat to re-create. So, give it to the University of Utah’s Theatre Department for giving it the old college try. Several cast members are making their university theater debut, so hopefully their skin is tough enough for the well-known audience quips and customary insults. The actor playing scantily clad Dr. Frank N. Furter best not be shy facing a packed auditorium, since wearing women’s underwear is usually reserved for freshman-frat-boy hazings.

Unfortunately, the shows won’t be performed at the witching hour, but feel free to go wild in costumes and hairdos, then participate by yelling at the performers. However, they probably don’t want water guns and rice—after all, this is a play, not a film.

The Rocky Horror Show @ Babcock Theater, 300 S. 1400 East, 801-581-7100, Feb. 19-March 7, 7:30 p.m. (plus two Saturday matinees)
