Teresa Flowers is a local artist who’s involved in all manner of art forms that she incorporates into her company Sleepictures (SleePictures.com). She’s taken an active role in the community in the past few years and is the founder of the Women’s Art Center as well as an advocate for awareness of AIDS and Lyme disease. Her work has been exhibited internationally as well as featured in Jane and Utah Business magazines. She’s recently added singing, modeling and radio show hostess to her repertoire.

When did you first know you were an artist?
I have always been into drawing and art ever since I was little. It first started in grade school, when some of the children in class started collecting my drawings and taping them to the side of their desks. I was in love with the television show I Dream of Jeannie. If you were a girl, I drew you a female version of Jeannie coming out of a bottle, with a ponytail on the top of her head. And if you were a boy, you got the male version with big muscles. They were tailor-made just for you. That’s when the artist was born.

You dabble in quite a few areas of the art world. What’s your favorite?
I favor all of them for different reasons. They all require such different frames of mind.  Painting is fun because it is all from my imagination and done in solitude. Photography takes lots of planning, money, models and assistants. However, it’s very rewarding. My favorite moments are out in the field with my friends while taking photos. Designing is great because I am getting my work out in a totally different manner. It’s such a great feeling to be out and about and see someone wearing a Sleepictures accessory. I love modeling because I get into character and use my body as a tool to express myself. Singing is something I have always wanted to do professionally. I am constantly learning and being humbled. Learning and growing is my goal in life, and I live my life to create.

What are your current projects?
I have been involved with my band and have my own radio show on UtahFM.org on Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m. called Obsession. I am also currently collaborating with Ambiguous Clothing and will have some designs on their women’s and children’s clothing lines. I am also working on a book of my photographs that will include photographs of my mother and her struggle with living and dying of AIDS, self portraits—basically my journey through life all shot on film. I am in the beginning stages, so it may take me many moons to scan, edit and write about it. I feel very strongly about this project and it is sure to be one of my greatest accomplishments. I am currently taking donations/sponsors to help with this project. (Please e-mail teresa@sleepictures.com if interested.)

Besides art, what are you passionate about?
My last series of paintings was about my journey with having Lyme disease. Not a lot of people know about Lyme, so my paintings helped shed some light on the realities of the disease. For more information about Lyme disease, visit LymeNet.org. I also have donated photographs to the Focus on Aids benefit to help raise money for people with AIDS and education. And, UtahFM.org, the radio station that hosts my radio show, is a nonprofit and could use our community’s support.
