Louis C.K.

Louis C. K. may be one of the funniest comics performing today—but if you’ve never heard of him, you’re not alone. Loyal fans love his material; everyone else just asks, “Who is Loowee SeeKay?” What fame he does have is due mostly to word-of-mouth, rather than TV exposure. In 2006, HBO gave him his own show, Lucky Louie, but it lasted only one season. This is a typical scenario for him. He’s amazingly talented, has won several awards (including an Emmy) and is popular in small circles—but can’t break through to the mainstream.

It’s probably due to the fact that he’s so … well, ordinary. You won’t see him flying all over the stage to get a laugh. He usually stands relatively still, dresses mainly in a black shirt and jeans, and with his ever-receding red hair and unassuming goatee, he’s not a visually memorable guy. It is this unimposing presence, however, that makes his act so powerful. Louis C. K. talks about the minutia of life with unforgiving sarcasm and vulgarity that takes you completely by surprise, like when he discusses a question once posed by his wife: “Do you think about me when you masturbate?” His reply: “What are you, fuckin’ high? Why would I do that? I can think about anybody … that’s magical!” You’ll probably find yourself thinking, “I wish I could say that and get away with it.” By the time the show is over, you’ll wonder why you didn’t know about him sooner.

[Note: At press time, Wiseguys has announced the show as sold out.] (Jennifer Heaney) Louis C.K. @ Wiseguys, 269 Historic 25th St., Ogden, 801-622-5588, Thursday, Feb. 12, 7 p.m. WiseguysComedy.com
