Brunch isn’t just about the classic omelet and dessert buffets we know and love.

The weekend—once an oasis from chaos—is now just as peppered with commitments as our workweek. We must cease this nonsense and encourage a little indulgence on Saturday or Sunday mornings. I implore you, good people of Utah, to reserve a couple of hours right around 11 a.m. Find some good company, a local independent newspaper (shameless plug intended) or a good book, and claim a table at a killer brunch spot.

Brunch? Yes, it’s not quite breakfast, and it’s not quite lunch. But, it’ll give you a whole different perspective on your weekend. Brunch isn’t just about the classic omelet and dessert buffets we know and love, but it is still about options. Locally, Pago in the 9th & 9th district has created an artisan twist to brunch. Though the food is small in structure, the menu boasts many favorites prepared with a simple, fresh approach.

Meanwhile, Wild Grape Bistro invites you to enjoy brunch refined, beckoning with an impressive beverage menu that offers mimosas, mojitos, specialty coffee drinks and dining options that are sure to delay any onset of the Monday blues.

Ruth’s Diner in Emigration Canyon is a proven crowd-pleaser, and just a few turns up the road, you’ll find another brunch haven, the Sun and Moon Cafe. Downtown, Caffe Molise offers the decadence that is the anacardi tostata: essentially, Italian toast, as opposed to French variety. I suggest sharing it as an indulgent first course. That’s right: first course. This is brunch, so go a little crazy.

Wherever you go, embrace the weekend (again). Eating brunch will not solve the health-care impasse or fix the economy, but it might change your life. At the very least, it will give you reason to gleefully anticipate the weekend.
