Salt Lake County Truth in Taxation Hearing

The Salt Lake County Budget has
proposed a 16 percent property-tax hike for 2013. With that proposed extra bite out of taxpayers’ wallets, the Truth in Taxation hearing will allow residents to sound off on whether or not the hike is acceptable. The tax on a $235,000 residence would increase from $352.21 to $411.02; for a $235,000 business, the tax would increase from $640.38 to $747.30. If you think you’ve been taxed enough already—or not enough—then don’t just complain to your neighbor; come and speak out at this meeting.

Operation Smile 5K
Saturday, Aug. 10
It’s not too late to use your sneakers for something other than mowing the lawn this summer. This week, you can put one foot in front of the other for a good cause and pay $10 to $20 to walk a mile or run a 5K to benefit Operation Smile. The group corrects cleft lips and
palates, a disfigurement that affects hundreds of thousands of children around the world and makes it hard for them to speak, eat or even smile.

Utah Day of Action for Wolves
Wednesday, Aug. 14
Utah taxpayer money has gone to help some high-priced lobbyists advocate
that gray wolves be taken off the endangered-species list. This week, you can join wolf supporters, who point out that the predators haven’t technically recovered in Utah, an area that was once part of their native habitat. If wolves don’t even have a paw-hold in their former habitats, activists say it’s too soon to de-list them from federal protection.
