In 2007, the Sundance Film Festival launched its New Frontier on Main program, a showcase venue for video installations that pushed the already-blurred boundaries between cinema and fine art. This year, the concept has gotten too big for Park City alone, and Salt Lake City will get its chance to experience this cutting edge.

The Salt Lake Art Center becomes an official festival venue this week, as five New Frontier pieces are showcased. Among them are All That Is Solid Melts Into Air, by Mark Boulos, which places two documentaries side by side: one about a war over oil resources in Nigeria, and the other about Chicago stock traders speculating on energy futures. Lynn Hershman Leeson’s Raw/War (pictured) serves as a live, user-generated video archive about the achievements of female artists; Leeson herself will lead a discussion on Jan. 25 at 4:45 p.m. And actor James Franco digs deep into the semiotics of a sitcom with his multimedia piece Three’s Company: The Drama, and visits the venue for a discussion on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.

But, this experience doesn’t end when the festival does. Revisit the Art Center from Feb. 4-March 25, as additional pieces from the Park City New Frontier exhibit join those already featured—including the interactive transmedia story Pandemic 1.0 and Daniel Canogar’s found-object multimedia sculpture Hippocampus 2—plus additional panels and performances.
