Access Film-Music Showcase
Access Film-Music kicked off Sundance on Jan. 20 at Piper Down with a free sneak-peek of its 12-day showcase, featuring a wide range of talented acts from around the world.
The event continues in Park City with these and plenty of other artists nightly for the duration of the festival at The Spur Bar & Grill (352 Main), Wasatch Brew Pub (250 Main) and J.B. Mulligan’s (804 Main). AccessFilmMusic.net
ASCAP Music Café
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) returns to host the Sundance ASCAP Music Café (@ The Stanfield Gallery, 751 Main) with a daily showcase of artists including Brendan Benson, Califone, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Black Dynamite Sound Orchestra, LeAnn Rimes and The Fray. The gallery also curated an avant-garde exhibition featuring works by Devo great Mark Mothersbaugh, Brandon Boyd of Incubus, pop artist icons Steve Kaufman and Peter Max, Joseph Arthur, and many more. Beehive Tea Room: Sundance Film Festival Café
The Beehive Tearoom (12 W. Broadway, Salt Lake City) hosts the Salt Lake Sundance Festival Café featuring local bands each festival evening beginning at 7 p.m. Highlights include Joey Cougar & The Starfish, Paul Jacobsen and Red Rock Hot Club. BeehiveTeaRoom.com
BMI
BMI will host its eighth annual Sundance Snowball on Jan. 27 from 6-9 p.m. at Sundance House (Kimball Art Gallery, corner of Main Street and Heber Avenue), featuring a live audio/video mash-up performance by DJ Thomas Golubic that includes custom-created audio/visual montages of film set to an “eclectic supply of upbeat head-nodders and slinky dancefloor grooves.” Sundance.org
Park City Bars and Clubs
Locals, out-of-towners and celebrities pack Main Street bars and clubs throughout the festival. Occasionally, establishments are taken over for private parties, but, for the most part, Sundance provides a good chance to experience some great music. Highlights include Joan Jett & The Blackhearts at Harry O’s (427 Main) on Saturday, Jan. 23, and Charli 2na from Jurassic 5 at The Star Bar (268 Main) the same night. But with many musicians in town for the festivities, it’s often worth hunting for “secret shows.” Keep your ear to the ground—or Twitter.
Seattle Party/Sub Pop Showcase
This year, the Seattle Party is aimed at commemorating Washington Film Works, the legendary Sub Pop Records and MTV’s newest musical series “$5 Cover: Seattle.” The Jan. 24 party is a private reception at The Star Bar (268 Main) but the doors will be open to the public at 9 pm for The Moondoggies and Sub Pop’s newest recruits, Beach House.
Sundance’s “A Celebration of Music in Film”
One of the annual highlights of Sundance is their evening geared towards celebrating music in film. This year, there will be an acoustic set by Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt alternating songs, performing side-by-side in an old-fashioned guitar pull. The fun will take place on Sunday, Jan. 24, 8 p.m. at the Sundance House (Kimball Art Gallery, corner of Main Street and Heber Avenue). Sundance.org
