Those who attend the Sundance Film Festival every year often focus on the feature films, bypassing the shorts programs. That’s an unfortunate mistake, but one they have a small chance to rectify—and without having to wait until next January.

Tonight, the Sundance Institute Film Series presents a program of 18 short films that explore a range of animation styles—photographic, computer-generated, hand-drawn, clay stop-motion—far beyond what you see in family oriented movies that end up at your local multiplex.

Joining Sundance programmers Todd Luoto and Kim Yutani are three filmmakers with festival pedigrees: Carson Mell (Chonto, Sundance 2008), Corky Quakenbush (A Pack of Gifts Now, Sundance 1999) and Yi Zhou (Hear Earth Heart, Sundance 2009 and Paradise, Sundance 2008). Enjoy the filmmakers’ Sundance entries, plus more examples of their work, then join them for a discussion of the many faces of animation.
