Do you have a particular song, performer or group that picks you up?

Steve Matney: The pan-flute hippie outside. Hands down.

Brandon Burt: Old Latin jazz and/or pop music always puts me in a good mood: Tito Puente, Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, João Gilberto. For dangerously low perkiness levels, however, an emergency dose of Juan Garcia Esquivel may be indicated.

Valeri Tronier: “Valerie Loves Me” by Material Issue. That song can lift anyone’s spirits. Especially if they’ve the good fortune to actually know a Valeri who loves them.

Faith Burnham: I can be in the worst mood ever, and just hearing the opening bars of a Beatles song will make me smile.

Emily Prachthauser: Where do I begin? I’m a sucker for indie rock. And British rock. Damon Albarn is my hero. He’s the front man for Blur; Gorillaz; and The Good, The Bad and The Queen. He’s a genius. And he’s hot. He’s pretty much perfect in my eyes.

Jesse James Burnitt: Anything by The Cure or The Smiths will always pull me through the fog of my darkest, most miserable moments. Maybe it’s the sense of identifying. Anything happy will just piss me off more.

Jeff Reese: I listen to a little Rage or Korn. The world slows down and I am on Cloud 9.

Paula Saltas: I always crank it up when I hear Santana’s “Smooth” and Prince’s “Little Red Corvette.” OK, make fun of me for liking Prince. I don’t care.

Bill Frost: “The End” by The Doors. Reminds me of my tour in ’Nam.

Jamie Gadette: Le Tigre, Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, P.J. Harvey, Emily Haines and The Gossip remind me that women can rock without stripping or playing dumb—and that’s a nice feeling.

Blade Brown: The Sounds! Ever since I saw Maja Ivarsson spit all over her fans, I knew she was badass. But let’s not forget The Faint, Tegan & Sara, Shiny Toy Guns and, my newest obsession, Blaqk Audio.

Scott Renshaw: Any time I’m feeling low, I listen to country music because it usually reminds me that my life isn’t as miserable as the stories they tell. Also, it reminds me how happy I should be that I don’t ordinarily listen to country music.
