This year, Utah is in store for some painful budget cuts. If you were in charge—at any level of government—how would you cut government expenditures?

n

n

Lia Pretorius: I’d start by eliminating tax shelters for religious organizations that use their funds to influence public policy through political activism. Think how nice it would be to have all those additional funds—you play, you pay!

n

n

Ted McDonough: Replace UTA junkets to Europe with junkets to Sandy, by bus.

n

n

Eric S. Peterson: Cut abstinence-only sex-ed funding. If abstinence is all you’re teaching, you might as well not be teaching anything at all. Then, to increase funds, simply start taxing a severance tax on coal extraction in Utah.

n

n

Annie Quan: Get rid of the ridiculously costly but dumb fireworks shows in July.

n

n

Kathy Mueller: How about getting all of the government agencies on board with the “idle free” initiative? You know, that crazy idea some fifth-grader had to cut emissions.

n

n

James Burnitt: I would hold the line on higher education! Keep that money where it is; it’s too important to cut.

n

n

Christopher Westergard: I would not cut government expenditures. I would tax, tax and tax some more! Yeah, that is what I would do! That way, the common government official could spend, spend and spend some more!

n

n

Ted Scheffler: With apologies to Brett Clifford, my favorite wine czar, I would disband the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. tttt
