It’s on a community-college campus, which may not be the first place you’d look for delightful musical theater. But The Grand Theatre has developed quite a track record for lively, well-cast productions of both classics and new favorites—and the current production of Oliver! looks like a good prospect to keep the streak alive.
The Grand’s season opener—Lionel Bart’s Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist—may be familiar to audiences either from other stage incarnations or from the 1968 Oscarwinning film adaptation. The story of a young orphan took on a bit of pep when combined with now-beloved songs like “Food, Glorious Food” and “Consider Yourself.” But, Salt Lake City audiences may be in for even more of a treat with the dream casting of Utah theater veteran Max Robinson (left) as Fagin, the ringleader of a gang of young London pickpockets with whom Oliver falls in. Like Oliver himself, you may end up asking, “Please, sir, can I have some more?”
Oliver! @ The Grand Theatre, 1575 S. State, 801-957-3322, through Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday; 2 p.m. Saturday matinee, $10-$24. The-Grand.org
