This week the Legislature’s Veterans Reintegration Task Force will be hearing how the shutdown has affected veterans and military families and the public can come voice their outrage. This weekend help raise awareness of mental illness and recovery at a free National Alliance on Mental Illness charity walk in Liberty Park. Later on in the week celebrate Food Day by learning about the politics of hunger at a forum looking at issues like how sequestration cuts have hurt nonprofit food pantries.

While the government shutdown closed Utah’s military facilities only temporarily before furloughed employees were funded, the impact was still harsh. Worse than that, however, is the fact that if the government shutdown is not resolved soon, pension and disability benefits may not be paid to Utah’s veterans. Friday, the Legislature will be discussing the shutdown’s impact on Utah’s veterans and military families and has asked the state’s federal delegates to come and speak. They might be too scared to address voters, but you can still attend and speak publicly about how the shutdown has affected you.

Saturday, Oct. 19
This Saturday you can come out in walk in support of your fellow citizens, neighbors, friends, family and community members who struggle with mental illness. Mental illness can still be a taboo subject (see Five Spot), which is why it takes community support to remind those in need of the love and help that is available to them. Register the day of the walk for free, or go online to make donations.

Food Day Forum
Monday, Oct. 21
Celebrate Food Day with some food for thought by attending a free panel featuring local low-income advocates and others as they discuss food insecurity, sequestration and the 2012 U.S. Farm Bill among other topics.
