Fifty-year anniversaries are hard to celebrate. On one side of the coin, you have the hard fact that you are indeed old. On the other side resides a long list of achievements and accomplishments that only a half-century can bring.
For The Second City, Chicago’s legendary sketch-comedy troupe, that other side of the coin just happens to be filled with some of the best, brightest and biggest names in comedy. We’re talking about the likes of John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Martin Short, John Candy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey and many others who spent their formative years fine-tuning their quick-witted comedy on its stage.
So, how does such a reputable house celebrate such an anniversary? That’s right—they go back to school. The Second City Goes to College: The FAFSA & The Furious is a riotously funny new show featuring both archival and new material, exploring those seminal years spent on campus.
Partly scripted, the show will also feature a substantial amount of improvisational material, keeping things energized with unpredictability. Who knows? There’s always a good chance that with new cast members Ross Bryant, Jessica Joy and Derek Shipman, the audience will be laughing along to members of the next generation of comic legends—or, at the very least, the next supporting cast members of Saturday Night Live.
