At the Salt Lake Film Society—operators of the Broadway and Tower Theatres—membership has many privileges. Among them is a rare opportunity for a 35mm screening of Billy Wilder’s 1950 film Sunset Boulevard, one of the films chosen in the National Film Registry’s first induction class of 1989.

The classic story casts William Holden as Joe Gillis, a down-on-his-luck screenwriter who narrates the film from the inconvenient position of being dead in the swimming pool of faded silent-film queen Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). In flashback, we learn how Joe came to that unhappy state, having accepted Norma’s offer to write the movie that will be her glorious cinema comeback—and perhaps even allow her to be ready for her close-up, Mr. DeMille.

You can be ready to see the movie close-up—and the beer reception that precedes it—but you need to be a member. Visit the Salt Lake Film Society Website to find out how.

Sunset Boulevard @ Broadway Centre Cinemas, 111 E. Broadway, 801-321-0310, March 22, 7:30 p.m., free for members. SaltLakeFilmSociety.org
