Indian Street Food in SLC
Connoisseurs of Indian street food will be happy to know that you no longer have to travel to South Jordan to get it. Lavanya Mahate, owner of Saffron Valley Indian Street Foods in South Jordan, has opened Saffron Valley East India Cafe (26 E St., 800-281-7211) in the Avenues. The cafe, which has a private dining room—the Viceroy Banquet—features rich mahogany accents and a throwback to the 1920s and the original East India Trading Company. “We are excited to bring Saffron Valley to downtown Salt Lake City and the Avenues,” Mahate says. “It will be an ideal eatery for our guests, people who enjoy healthy, fresh and flavorsome Indian food, while providing the community with a new restaurant that celebrates diversity.” As at her other restaurant, Mahate says that Saffron Valley East India Cafe will offer a range of Indian street foods, including dosas, chaat, wraps, biryanis, kebabs, curries, tandoor-baked pizza and more. In addition, the restaurant has a wine and chai bar and will offer culinary/cooking classes. A Local Table is a Park City-based business that promotes and sells foods from artisan food producers both online (ALocalTable.com) and from their retail outlet (6436 N. Business Park Loop Road, Unit B) next to Home Depot. According to owners Ken Kullack and Kylie Anderson, “We don’t offer a dizzying array of foods, but rather focus on the ones we feel are doing it right.” They strive to sell natural, minimally processed foods that are “made with care.” Utah artisan foods on A Local Table’s roster includes Butcher’s Bunches preserves, Gold Creek Farms and Beehive cheeses, Creminelli salamis, Slide Ridge Honey, Pepperlane jellies and jams, Shepherd’s chÃ¨vre, LuAnn’s cupcakes, Yee-Haw pickles, Bees Brothers honey caramels and a lot more.
