One of the many wonderful things about a Utah summer is discovering theater in places you may not have seen it in before.
The Riverton Arts Council is serving up the regional premiere of Hairspray: Broadway’s Big Fat Musical Comedy. John Waters’ 1988 film about music, race relations and love in 1962 Baltimore inspired composer Marc Shaiman, lyricist Scott Wittman and writers Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan to kick up the story into a full-fledged musical. The 2002 Broadway production in turn inspired a 2007 film adaptation, and now local markets are getting their shot. You can’t stop the beat, or the irrepressible Tracy Turnblad’s dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show.
