All summer, the redistricting committee has been touring Utah and getting input on redrawing the state’s political boundaries. Now those plans go the Legislature, which will be considering the final proposals. This weekend, you can also attend a charity fiesta in support of Weber County open space. Later, don’t miss a public hearing on a proposed Salt Lake City Walmart.

Redistricting Committee
Friday, Aug. 19

The public has spoken on redistricting; now it’s time to see if the Legislature was listening. Friday, the Legislature will review proposals made by members of the public regarding redrawing the political boundaries of voting districts that will elect legislators, congressmen and local school-board members for the next decade. Speak up now before the ink has dried on the maps. Utah Capitol, 350 N. State, Senate Building, Room 210, Aug. 19, 9 a.m., RedistrictUtah.com

Weber Pathways Fiesta Fundraiser
Friday, Aug. 19

Lovers of Weber County’s great outdoors and welcoming open spaces are encouraged to attend the eighth-annual T.G.I. Fiesta! on Friday to celebrate the work of Weber Pathways, a local nonprofit working to protect open space in the county. Those attending can win recreational gear in a silent auction and enjoy tasty hors d’oeuvres from The Oaks Restaurant and a delicious Mexican dinner from the Union Grill. A $40 dinner ticket will get you into the fiesta and will go to help the nonprofit’s advocacy for the protection and promotion of non-motorized trails in Weber County. MTC Pavilion, 1800 S. Monroe Blvd., Ogden Botanical Gardens, Ogden, 801-393-2304, Aug. 19, 6-8 p.m., WeberPathways.org

Walmart Zoning Hearing
Tuesday, Aug. 23

A Walmart is looking to land in Salt Lake City at 2705 E. Parley’s Way. Company representatives have floated two petitions to amend zoning in the area to pave the way for a Walmart to be built at the site of a former Kmart at an expanded size that conflicts with current zoning. Come to the hearing and give your thumbs up to expanded low prices or recommend the city roll back the petitions and keep the Walmart consistent with the feel of the Parley's Way neighborhood. Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State, Room 315, Aug. 23, 7 p.m., SLCGov.com

This article has been corrected from the print version that incorrectly implied the hearing would decide if a Walmart would open on Parley's Way. The Walmart is expected to open regardless, but the hearing is to decide whether a zoning change would be granted to allow Walmart to expand the construction of the store beyond beyond the current zoning conformities.
