The Independence Day weekend is a time to celebrate all that is America, but we also find ourselves in an increasingly globalized civilization.

Utah sports fans have the unique opportunity to celebrate both forms of citizenship this weekend by attending the world’s most popular game and the national pastime on back-to-back nights.

On Friday night, celebrate your internationality by driving your Prius—or better yet, taking TRAX—to Sandy to watch Real Salt Lake play “futbol.” Feel free to call the field a “pitch.” Use words like “nil,” “corner,” “offsides” and “stoppage time” to your U.N.-loving heart’s content, while watching floppers act like they’ve been shot after a mere shove.

Follow that up on Saturday night and celebrate the Greatest Country on Earth by driving a GM car that gets no more than 15 mpg to the ballpark, where you can partake of two of America’s greatest inventions: baseball and hot dogs. Sing the National Anthem before the game and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch. Watch guys who may well be bulked up on various chemical combinations knock the ball a country mile before finishing up the weekend with fireworks following the game. We can all differ on which one we like better, but either way, there’s no disputing that it’s tough to beat taking in a game, any type of game, on a summer night.
