For some dedicated dance students, it’s the wrap-up of a three-week exploration. For those who just love dance, it may be the beginning of a new exploration.
Tonight, professor Mary-Jean Cowell from Washington University in St. Louis presents a lecture on the life and work of choreographer Michio Ito, the subject of this year’s RDT Summerdance Workshop. RDT members and workshop students follow the lecture with a performance of Ito repertory works, thanks in large part to an National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces grant to help preserve Ito’s contributions to dance for future generations. Work by RDT alum Andy Noble is also part of the evening.
Get the quick & dirty version of Ito’s significance in blending Eastern and Western modes of dance. It’s like three weeks—and indeed, an entire artistic career—tied up in one night.
