Slut Walk, Food Drive & 400 South Planning

This week, clean out the cupboards and help fight hunger among the homeless. Then, join the Salt Lake City SlutWalk and rally against the shame and blame of our country’s rape-enabling culture. Later, join a Salt Lake City Council hearing to discuss the future of the 400 South neighborhood and how to rezone it for a more livable future.

Drive-Up Food Drive
Friday, Aug. 31
Scour your cupboards and bring some canned goods and other nonperishables to the Volunteers of America Drive-Up Food Drive. In 2011, volunteers in Utah donated more than 73,000 food items. Unfortunately, hunger doesn’t know a season, so come out and drop off some food and pick up some good karma in the process. Homeless Youth Resource Center, 655 S. SlutWalk SLC
Saturday, Sept. 1
With a United States Senator tossing around the term “legitimate rape” and a major state political fundraiser facing multiple rape charges, the country and the state could use a moment to examine the society we live in, where rape is coddled, qualified and denied, and victims are re-victimized by uncaring communities. This weekend, push back against slut shaming and victim blaming at the SlutWalk, where participants will meet, organize and make signs at the downtown library, then march to the Capitol (see p. 8 for more information). Salt Lake City Council 400 South Corridor Hearing
Tuesday, Sept. 4
The Salt Lake City Council is holding a hearing on new policies for mixed-use development and increased transportation options around the 400 South TRAX line that runs from from Main Street to 1000 East.
