Celebrate National Trails Day

This week has opportunities for every level of activism. At the grass-roots level, celebrate National Trails Day by working to beautify the Redwood Nature Area in West Valley City. You can also show up to the Salt Lake Board of Education to speak up and learn about the upcoming budget revisions. To kick things up a notch, the deadline is open to run for four open Salt Lake City Council spots.

Run for Salt Lake City Council
June 1-7

If you’re a Salt Laker who thinks you can run things in these parts better than the current city fathers, why not throw your hat in the ring? You may not win, but in the process, you’ll learn how to organize support around the city issues you care about most to effect real change—whether that’s parking meters or city lights. From June 1 to 7, filing is open for Salt Lake City Council districts 1, 3, 5 and 7. For questions about filing, call the Salt Lake City Recorder’s Office at 801-535-7671, or visit SLCGov.com/Recorder. For a map of the council districts, visit http://citywk.ly/ZaEjxN

National Trails Day
Saturday, June 1

Join the goodly tree huggers of Tree Utah and REI in celebrating National Trails Day by doing some cleanup and weed removal Saturday at the Redwood Nature Area in West Valley City. Tools, breakfast and lunch will be provided to those who register. Just show up with some work clothes, sunscreen and a water bottle, and you can help keep this natural area green and pristine. Redwood Nature Area, 3000 S. Lester St., West Valley City, 801-364-2122, June 1, 8:30 a.m.-noon, TreeUtah.org. RSVP at http://citywk.ly/10w08J4

Salt Lake City Board of Education
Tuesday, June 4

It’s budget time, and that means the Salt Lake Board of Education is looking for your input on the 2012-2013 fiscal-year budget, which will affect the education of area children. Show up, speak out and get an education on the state of school funding in your district. Salt Lake City Board of Education, 440 E. 100 South, 801-578-8332, June 4, 7-7:30 p.m., SLCSchools.org
