The Utah State Prison should remain in Draper [“Jail Bait,” April 4, City Weekly].
The cost of relocating the prison is estimated to be as high as $600 million; it’s too great a burden to place on the taxpayers of Utah at this time. Of course, if the business community is that desperate for more office buildings and cookie-cutter housing developments, then they should come up with the money to relocate the prison themselves. No taxpayer subsidies. Not one penny. Then, the taxpayer money that would have been spent to relocate the prison can be used to improve Utah’s education system, which ranks last in the nation in per-pupil spending.
However, knowing Utah, the chances of that happening are probably just slightly higher than the chances of Frank Sinatra rising from the dead and choosing to begin his comeback tour in Salt Lake City.
