Portia Early, X96 weekend DJ and host of Live & Local (Sundays, 8-10 p.m.), wants to tell you about three more of her favorite Utah bands and songs:
Dimension Zero, Nascentes
I received a demo from Dimension Zero last year and thought I had them all figured out: Industrial goth, reminiscent of ’90s artists Nitzer Ebb and Contagion, with cool electronic dance beats. Then last week, their debut album Scythe arrived in a mini coffin, and the slick, mirrored cover sports a 1950s cherry-red Cadillac-type hearse. At first, it was nothing new, save for a creepy chain saw synced with the keys. Apparently, the band has a chain saw at their live shows, and I’ve gotta see that! Then track 7 came along. My first thought was, “WTF?” All of the sudden, I heard a soft shuffle, Michel Buble vocals and, about a minute into “Nascentes,” a movie-action sequence similar to Batman. It’s the most fabulous thing I’ve heard in a long time. I plan to play the Halloween-ish tracks “R.I.P.” and “October” on X96 Live and Local next season. Dimension Zero doesn’t have any shows scheduled until October, so keep an eye on their Website for possible updates. (MySpace.com/DimensionZero)
Acuna, Breaking
This Logan band came out of nowhere this summer to play the X96 4-Play competition at The Gallivan Center (come to the finals at The Hard Rock Café starting Aug. 8 to vote for your favorite act. Winner plays the Big Ass Show main stage). Must be something in that Cache Valley water, since Logan band St. Boheme won City Weekly’s Showdown to Slammys and a trip to South By Southwest. Then they broke up. Bastards. Hopefully these Loganites will stick around. Their sound is catchy enough: clean, hard, messy fun. Log in now to X96.com for the next battle of the bands schedule. Amber Alert, Kill The Poets
This local act is a triple threat. Stage presence, looks and singing/acting chops. OK, maybe I’ve said too much. My lovely CW music editor hates it when I say the band is cute, but heck, I think frontman Addy is to drool for, with his dragonfly neck tattoo and killer dramatic, gut-wrenching vocals. It makes me think, “God, I want to mosh, but I can’t keep an eye off of your freaking neck!” Amber Alert formed in 2002, but now with their X96 4-Play success (gotta love shameless self-promotion), they’re finally starting to generate local buzz. Yeah, they’re emo, they have the hair, but they will totally rock you out of your black AFI concert shirts. A definite must-see. Check them out Aug. 25 at Addicted Café, formerly Under the Bridge Vegan Café. (MySpace.com/AmberAlertRock)
