When voters go to the polls, they elect leaders who they expect will listen to their constituents, not blindly follow party leadership. Why, then, does Rep. Jim Matheson, at the bidding of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., refuse to even acknowledge the public outcry over the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act—a paranoid piece of child-safety legislation?
The CPSIA legislates lead out of all children’s products, regardless of the risk of exposure (negligible in most cases) or cost (currently in excess of $4 billion). Never mind that there’s no evidence that the regulation has or will actually increase child safety.
Sen. Bennett was recently the opening speaker at a rally to amend the CPSIA—a law he originally signed. This law has had billions of dollars of unintended consequences for business, manufacturers, thrift stores and American families.
Bennett wisely realized that it’s possible to protect children and save businesses from billions of dollars of needless expenditures. Matheson (and the entire Democrat delegation) dutifully stayed away.
