This week, come out to a fundraiser party for the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. This weekend, you can do your activism in the sun by helping volunteer to maintain trees in Westpointe Park in Salt Lake City. Later on, get a crash course in the corporate influence of the American Legislative Exchange Council on politics at a special teach-in event put on by activists of Occupy SLC.

The fundraiser will include talks from influential blogger Heather Armstrong and Olympic snowboarder Graham Watanabe, as well as music, food and a silent auction with donations from many local businesses and artists. Westpointe Park Improvement
Saturday, May 19

Give your green thumb and your activism a workout this weekend by helping to bowl and chip trees at Westpointe Park on Salt Lake City’s west side. Volunteers need no previous bowling and chipping experience, but are asked to bring water, sunscreen and a hat. If you want to keep your city a little neater and greener, then come check out this project. Westpointe Park, 1920 W. Colonel Road (1100 North), May 19, 8 a.m.-11 a.m., sign up at MyVolunteerPage.com, or contact Savannah Wake at 801-535-6202 or savannah.wake@slcgov.com

ALEC Teach-In
Wednesday, May 23

Many activists consider ALEC a corporate shadow-government, since ALEC weds big corporations with state legislators to get them to pass bills friendly to businesses ranging from big oil and gas to the for-profit prison industrial complex. Learn more about ALEC at this free educational event that will lead up to activists welcoming ALEC, as the organization holds an annual meeting in Salt Lake City this summer. Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, Conference Room B, May 23, 7 p.m., ALECWC.org
