When Chainsaw Man and friends scare the bejeezus out of you in the parking lot, you’ll know you’ve come to a haunt with a special knack for stirring up horror and mayhem. New this year, Nightmare Mansion features nearly 100 actors in full makeup and costume whose sole purpose is to provoke blood-curdling screams.

“How far will you go?” The tagline of Nightmare Mansion refers to the four levels of terror that worsen as you venture deeper into the fear extravaganza. Nightmare in 3D is a maze of brilliantly creepy artwork comprised of malevolent skulls and contorted skeletons. The Mansion is the home of a satanic family that feasts on bloody body parts. The Asylum houses sadistic loonies and doctors, and the Dungeon features bodies hanging from meat hooks and ... well, you can imagine.

Nightmare Mansion is the demented brain child of three men: Castle of Chaos owner James Bernard, John Cluff and Sean Murray. In 1982, the Murray kids had outgrown trick or treating, so the family decided to design and run a haunted house called Halloween Theatre out of their garage. Though the original haunt wrapped up after 25 years, the Murray family tradition continues. Several family members have pitched in to construct and run Nightmare Mansion.

Some of the proceeds from Nightmare Mansion go to the Boys & Girls Clubs, so you can feel good about your descent into the dark realms. May I recommend that you pee beforehand?

Nightmare Mansion @ 5600 S. Redwood Road, weekdays, 7:30-10 p.m.; Fridays & Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. to midnight; until Oct. 31, NightmareMansion.com
