THE VOODOO ORGANIST

What’s Scott Wexton up to these days? Well, the hellacious Voodoo Organist, a former one-man show, is now touring as a three-piece band. His new crew is pretty fierce. You’d have to be to back a beast whose burden is unleashed through spooky jazz-lounge-blues-pop. When you hear Wexton’s gravel-growl set atop underworld keys, you’ll be doing as he says. NORFOLK & WESTERN

When not backing M. Ward on bass and guitar, Portland recording engineer Adam Selzer makes beautiful music with his wife, noisemaker Rachel Blumberg. The couple, along with a revolving crew toting violas, glockenspiels, cellos, trumpets, pianos, Wurlitzers and more, dabbles in pop, doo-wop, orchestral sounds. Some songs echo neighbor Colin Meloy’s penchant for mariners and squalls. Others rely on Selzer’s trademark instrument'a turn-of-the-century Victrola gramophone'to further explain how history repeats itself in the most wonderful ways. THE ELECTED

With all eyes turned to Jenny Lewis and her gospel-driven solo debut, fellow Rilo Kiley mate Blake Sennett has plenty of downtime to tune his equally precious side project The Elected. A gifted singer-songwriter, Sennett composes hushed, beach-blanket lullabies that describe common growing pains, heart pangs and momentary lapses of reasoning. The result might be too tame for some, however those who loved his vocals on Take Off and Landings’ “August” or the insistent “Small Figures in a Vast Expanse” will find The Elected’s sophomore album Sun, Sun, Sun a pleasant variation on familiar old favorites. BIBLE OF THE DEVIL

Chicago-based metal act Bible of the Devil are a bunch of regular Joes obsessed with noise and destruction. Amused by censors of so-called lascivious rock, the good-humored quartet adopted a tongue-in-cheek title that confuses first-time concertgoers expecting performances by Satan’s minions. Instead, audiences are treated to melodic double leads in the key of Thin Lizzy, timeless high-pitched snarls and epic, D&D lyricism. The relative newcomers hope to convert faithful followers with their upcoming Cruz Del Sur debut, slated for a summer release. Halleluiah! Club Vegas, 445 W. 400 South, 9 p.m. Info: 364-8347

BANG SUGAR BANG

They aren’t exactly gutter punks, but Los Angeles trio Bang Sugar Bang uphold every bit of the DIY ethic that helped predecessors X and the Germs rise from obscurity with street cred firmly intact. The two guys and a girl first gained notice as workaholic rock & rollers who wrote, recorded, engineered, released and promoted 2003’s Greatest Hits through self-booked shows with random death metal and country acts. When club owners shot them down, they started their own scene Kiss of Kill, a thriving night of nitty-gritty debauchery that’s “all about the music.” There, audience members scream along to every “yeah, yeah, yeah” and “whoa, whoa, whoa” off 2005’s Thwak, Thwak Go Crazy!! and other anthems by bands who share BSB’s vision'one that helped land legendary engineer Steve Albini for their next full-length album. ROB ZOMBIE

Grisly. Nasty. Vile. Brutal. Brilliant. Unwatchable. Masterpiece. Such are the varied qualifiers used to describe Rob Zombie’s cinematic bloodbath Devil’s Rejects. The 2005 horror film delighted and disgusted critics in equal measure, which is likely the sort of reaction Zombie intended all along. Not one to pander to mainstream audiences, Zombie apparently takes pleasure in filtering his myriad talents (illustrator, musician, director, writer) through twisted, potentially alienating projects. Educated Horses is no exception. Laced with deliciously creepy vocals, the album forgoes traditional metal for slicker industrial-driven glam rock, a move that is sure to alienate some listeners and thrill others.
