The model of nonprofit arts organizations has unfortunately become synonymous with poor management, poor organization and, given current economic conditions, simply poor.

Michael Kaiser, president of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, is on a 50-state tour speaking to anybody who will listen about the modern-day challenges plaguing just such nonprofit arts organizations the globe over. Dubbed The Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initiative campaign, Kaiser (fittingly christened “The Turn-Around King”) will discuss his experience in the world of arts-organization management positively redirecting such ventures as the Royal Opera House (London), American Ballet Theatre and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

As the economy only slowly begins to improve, the Arts in Crisis project fills a much-needed role, providing what amounts to free arts-management consultation to more than 650 organizations across the country—including fundraising, building more effective boards, budgeting and marketing. Admission is free, but registration is required.

Michael Kaiser @ Kingsbury Hall, 1395 E. Presidents Circle, University of Utah, 801-581-7100, July 15, 9:30-11 a.m., free (registration required). KingTix.com
