Nowadays, “going green” has caught on among the general public; being conscious of the natural world is no longer just for the avid conservationist. For those who aim to project their forward thinking farther than the next trend, a good idea would be to plant the seeds of awareness in the minds of children so that they develop a greater appreciation for the environment early on.

Linda Winston—along with the current Poetry Foundation’s “Children’s Poet Laureate” and children’s fiction writer with more than 40 books, Mary Ann Hoberman—have presented an anthology of poems titled The Tree That Time Built that is more than just a collection of works. Borrowing its title from Darwin’s first sketch, these poems by past and contemporary writers, including Hoberman herself, celebrate the parallels between science and nature through their recurring themes, and attempt to spark discussion and education for young readers.
