Deseret Digital Media’s recent decision to disable the KSL.com comment boards and severely limit content on the DeseretNews.com comment boards is quite disturbing. Civil discourse is the most effective, propitious way to solve problems. While Deseret Digital Media’s ideals are laudable, capriciously abridging the right to comment on news stories is wrong.

The First Amendment is absolute, as Supreme Court Justices Hugo Black and William O. Douglas said. Under the First Amendment, people have the right to say or think whatever they wish, no matter how backward, hateful, or idiotic. As Earl Warren once said, “the censor’s sword pierces deeply into the heart of free expression.”
