How did Furt come about?
nI didn’t see anybody making the music I wanted to hear, so I said, “Fine, I’m going to do it myself.” Nobody wants to do it first, because you don’t have a fan base. We had some bunk shows, but we’ve been steadily building ever since. Oct. 13 was our two-year anniversary.

Congratulations. Where’s the best place in Salt Lake City to relax?
nWell, we drink a lot here [Furs drummer Stefanie’s house] but a bar would be The Twilite Lounge.
What’s the current book and author you’re enjoying?
nArthur Schopenhauer’s Essays and Aphorisms.
Favorite B-Movie of all time?
nBuster’s World; Driller Killer and Bad Taste [are close seconds].

Where do you get your sense of style from?
n[Musician] Ian Svenonius.
Where do you shop for clothes at?
nThe D.I. [Deseret Industries]. I don’t want to spend more money than I have to on buying clothes. I hate buying clothes. For boots and jackets, though, I go to Decades.
What are some of your favorite publications?
nCity Weekly, seriously. I pick it up once a week to see what’s going on in town. And Vogue. Any ladies’ magazine lying around.
Vogue, really?
nIt shows me how to be a better man. I recently found this Oprah magazine my mom had. And I saw an article on what kind of man you have and I said, “Oh, wait—I’m that guy. That’s horrible.”

What’s a nice spot to enjoy the natural beauty of Utah?
nCapitol Reef. But I love it here, anywhere. There’s a canyon next to my place, too. And, in any direction, you can drive for 30 minutes and leave the city.
If you’re going out to catch a flick, where will you do it?
nThe Tower, Brewvies or The Broadway.
Where have you eaten recently that you enjoyed?
nSawadee on South Temple. It is really good.
What’s your favorite old-school video game?
nGolden Axe [The rest of the conversation is too long for print, but let’s just say it got pretty deep into the pros and cons of Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter.]
Who are your favorite artists from any genre?
nThe top three would be: Anton Newcombe from The Brian Jonestown Massacre. He just keeps going, no matter what. He is constantly moving. Yeah, you’re broke; yeah, you have no money, but somehow he’s still making albums.
Primal Scream—it’s more of a new thing for me, but it has changed my life a lot.
nErykah Badu. Whatever makes it or doesn’t make it, write that, because she makes my world a better place.
nWhat’s a perfect afternoon for you?
nI was at work listening to RadioWest with Doug Fabrizio [on KUER 90.1 FM]. And I heard the whole interview with the director of Gonzo [a new Hunter S. Thompson documentary], and I heard it was the last day it was playing here. I left work early and went to the art museum. Then got lunch and went to The Broadway to watch the movie. It was perfect.

nVinyl.
Where do you get your gear at?
nFrom Craig “The Dude.”

What are you playing through these days?
nLate ’60s, early ’70s Trainer. It’s the Canadian version of the Fender Twin Tube.
What kind of guitar do you play?
nOh, that’s a secret.
