Scott Renshaw’s review of the new Pedro Almodovar film, Broken Embraces [Cinema Clips, Feb. 4, City Weekly] closes with the following: “The farcical film-within-the-film that Mateo makes with Lena looks far more simply entertaining—which only makes you wonder why Almodóvar couldn’t have made that film instead.” FYI: He did make that film in 1988. It’s called Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and it was his first international hit. While I agree that Broken Embraces is not Almodóvar’s strongest film, a familiarity with a larger portion of his entire oeuvre might make Renshaw’s experience of the film more enjoyable, and his review more credible.
