About a year ago, a twelve year old German Shepherd Dog named Katie came into our store with her foster parents looking for a home. No small feat for an old dog with a grey-haired muzzle, a few missing teeth and a gympy gate.
At the end of her life it would be difficult for Katie, who requires extra care and medical attention, to find a home while there are many adoptable younger and healthier dogs that could give back years of companionship.
Some folks thought it best to euthanize the old girl, but if you asked Katie, she would have said “hell no!” She still had a lot of energy and love for life. Denise agreed.
Putting aside her own interests and thinking only of Katie and her needs, Denise decided to take her home and care for her. She already had dogs in her home, but she managed to find time and space...and love for another dog in need.
Throughout the next year, Katie experienced what could very likely have been the best year of her life. Denise and her family took special care of Katie, loving her and seeing to all her needs. They were all saddened to have lost her this past week.
Katie is in heaven now making room for Denise right beside her and among other dogs Denise has loved and lost over the years. And don’t believe what they say about “no dogs in heaven...” of course they are there.
That’s what makes it heaven.
